Artist's Statement

I want my still life painting to resonate with the viewer.  Whether it's the nostalgia of an antique object, the reflection of light, or the colour palette I use, I hope the viewer can relate to and find connections in my work.  I love finding the perfect still life objects while hunting in thrift stores and antique shops.  These objects have a silent history and revive memories from the past.  They are the main characters in my paintings.

There is a joy in observing, making choices and applying my skills to create my work:  I invest in the time to design an effective composition. Source lighting produces reflection, highlight and cast shadow which leads the viewer's eye around the canvas.  Seeing and recording values correctly builds strong structural elements for my work.  My studies in cast drawing have strengthened my skills and are the base for my art.

I create work that develops through my process and imagination; it is not encumbered by external influences.  The ultimate compliment I hope for is for someone to connect with my work.
